  • The mango: not only ready to eat but also easy to prepare

In the countries where it originally comes from, the fruit even has religious significance. That says a lot about the status the mango enjoys. In Western European kitchens, the mango is primarily an exotic fruit that we wouldn’t want to be without. Just think of all the ways you can use this fruit! Especially if you know the best way to prepare a ripe EAT ME mango: it’s actually very easy.

There are quite a few varieties of mango grown worldwide. In shops, you’ll usually come across four varieties, which differ in shape and colour: Kent, Keitt and Palmer.

You’ll also notice a slight difference in flavour between the varieties. Not much, though, as the juicy flesh of every mango is rich and sweet.

How do you cut a mango?

There are many ways to remove the flesh from a mango’s skin. Before you start cutting a mango, it’s important to know that a mango is a stone fruit and contains an elongated, inedible stone in the centre.

Cutting a mango with the handy mango cutter

EAT ME has developed a handy mango cutter, which makes it very easy to stone and halve ripe mangoes.

    1. Take a ripe mango and stand it upright with the stalk facing downwards.

    2. Place the mango cutter on the mango, aligning the oval opening with the shape of the mango.

    3. Push the mango slicer down in one smooth motion.

    4. You can now scoop out the flesh from the two mango halves using a small knife and, if necessary, a spoon.

Don’t have a mango slicer to hand? Don’t worry.

    1. Take a ripe mango and place it on a surface with the stalk facing you.

    2. Using your knife, cut two long halves from the mango, running alongside the stone.

    3. You can now scoop out the flesh from the two mango halves using a small knife and, if necessary, a spoon.

Cutting mango into cubes or strips

Do you want to cut the mango into cubes?

Score the flesh of the mango halves vertically and horizontally. Then turn the mango halves inside out – so you have a ‘mango hedgehog’ – and simply cut the mango cubes away from the skin. Alternatively, you can score the mango halves vertically and horizontally without turning them inside out, and then scoop the cubes out of the halves with a spoon.

In that case, simply score the flesh vertically and scoop it out of the skin.

    From large to small

Depending on the variety, mangoes come in different weights. Some weigh 200 grams and are about the size of a large plum. There are also varieties that – don’t be alarmed – weigh as much as a kilo, the weight of a melon. The average mango you’ll find in the shop weighs around 300 grams.
